At the Chinese new year's party held on 1/29, about 1/3 of attendants are young Zheda alumni graduated after 2000, which indicates more young alumni are becoming active at alumni activities. To better serve our alumni, especially these young alumni, for their career developments,  Zheda Alumni Network will develop a series of career related seminars and activities.  

In this coming sunday 2/26 afternoon, Zheda Alumni Network will hold a seminar "From Engineer to Manager", co-organized with USTC Alumni Silicon Valley for alumni's early career planning. We will invite three accomplished alumni speakers who have successfully transformed themselves from individual contributors to managerial positions, to share their experiences how to switch from engineer track to management track in corporates, and more generally, how to plan for career development for Chinese engineers at Silicon Valley:

Mr. Heng Huang, Engineering Director from AT&T;

Dr. Liu Ren,         Principal Research Scientist and Engineering Manager at Bosch Research;

Mr. Zhi Lin,          Development Manager of Oracle Business Intelligence Application.

Each speaker will give a short overall presentations about their respective industry/area, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A session (please see their Bios at the end) .

This seminar is for all levels of engineers thinking of polishing career growth plan, esp. those aspiring to be in managerial positions.

Map&Direction:
Room LK120 is at the first floor of Li Ka Shing Center at Stanford School of Medicine. There are several parking lots within 5 minutes walking distance. P1 and P2 are closer, but usually full on Sunday. P3 and P4 usually have a lot of free parking spots on Sunday (P and A parking spots are free on Sunday).
 
Speaker’s Biography:
 
Mr. Heng Huang, currently serves as the Director, Distributed Antenna System (DAS) with AT&T. He leads the engineering effort of improving AT&T’s in-building cellular services in the west region of US. Prior to joining AT&T, Mr. Huang was the National Engineering Director with NextG Networks, a leading outdoor small cell solution provider later acquired by Crown Castle International for $1B. He also served as a Co-Chairman of the Business Interface Group with Silicon Valley Association of Startup Entrepreneurs (SVASE) and a grant reviewer of the Broadband Technology and Opportunity Program (BTOP), a $4.7B federal program administrated by National Telecom Information Administration (NTIA). Mr. Huang holds a Ph.D. degree from University of Missouri and a B.S. degree from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), both in Electrical Engineering. He also received management training from Stanford University.
 
Dr. Liu Ren, principal research scientist and engineering manager of Bosch Research, leading the visual computing technology group. He is currently responsible for shaping strategic directions and developing key technologies in the field of visual computing (computer graphics, computer vision, multimedia) for Robert Bosch Corporation, a multi-national corporation with over $60 Billion revenue and more than 300,000 employees worldwide. In particular, he has led the research, development, and production efforts for Bosch's 3D artMap (Chinese: 三维艺术导航地图 http://auto.sina.com.cn/car/2011-11-11/1018868700.shtml ), the world's first stylized 3D navigation map powered by non-photorealistic (artistic) rendering technologies. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 2006.He also holds a M.S. degree and B.S. degree from Department of Computer Science, at Zhejiang University, China.
 
Mr. Zhi Lin, Principal Member of Technical Staff at Oracle America Inc. He is acting as a development manager of Oracle Business Intelligence Application, one of the top BI product lines in the world, and managing software engineers across US and India. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Employee at Oracle. He worked on the Siebel Business Analytics Application, the No.1 CRM BI solution, at Siebel System Corp. He has a bachelor degree on Computer Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University, a master degree on Computer Science at University of Rhode Island, and a master degree on Information Systems Management at Carnegie Mellon University.

 

北加州浙江大学校友会和中国科技大学硅谷校友会一起2/26周日在斯坦福大学成功举办了职业发展讲座。邀请三位在硅谷公司已从工程师专型到工程经理的校友,与40多名校友听众一起探讨美国职场智慧及发展路径。几位报告人介绍了各自所从事工作及行业状况,就工作,升职,转轨等中国工程师所关心的常见问题畅谈了各自看法,并与与会者进行了热烈的互动交流。与硅谷大多数中国移民情况类似,两校在硅谷校友大多从事工程技术工作,而仅有少数转而从事管理工作。其中既有文化因素,也有职场经验问题。希望此次交流能够对校友的职业发展有所启发帮助。会后大家纷纷表示希望校友会多组织这样的活动, 让校友们在各种案例中互相学习,开发和提高职场发展潜力。
